One of the few of its kind still left on the market, the Dodge Challenger is a muscle car through and through. A quartet of V8 engines to pick from, easily customizable performance bits, a coupe body-style with enough interior room to use as a daily driver- the Challenger is as unique as it is ferocious. What’s the latest from this modern icon? Is it the right fit for your day-to-day around Cullman, Birmingham, and Jasper, AL?
These are the questions our Bill Penney CDJR team set off to answer with this 2022 Dodge Challenger review!
Choosing Your High-Powered Engine
At the core of any true muscle car is a large, responsive, and powerful motor that’s always ready to send you sizzling away from a stoplight. The 2022 Challenger lineup begins with a V6 engine in standard trims before giving way to an attractive lineup of V8s.
The standard 3.6L V6 is still plenty punchy, offering up 303 horsepower. The first of the V8 offerings would be a 5.7L HEMI® V8 making 375 horsepower. Next comes the 392 HEMI® putting down 485 horsepower and 475 lb-ft of torque.
Finally there’s the gem of the Challenger lineup: a 6.2L HEMI® which offers various power outputs depending on the tuning you get. The “tamest” version of the engine routes 717 horsepower to the wheels along with 656 lb-ft of torque. In it’s most aggressive, high-output variant it delivers an astonishing 807 horsepower!
Seemingly Endless Performance Customizations
Performance in the Dodge Challenger begins with the engine yet consists of many other customizable goodies.
For example, the transmission can be an automatic 8-speed or your choice of a 6-speed manual. If you want to get the power to the pavement as effectively as possible, all-wheel drive is likely your best bet. However, you can select a rear-wheel drive platform if you want to enjoy the old-school feel of muscle cars from yesteryear.
Performance driving modes allow you to alter your Challenger on a whim as you drive around, too. The drive modes include:
- Sport mode
- Track mode
- Custom mode
- Eco and valet mode
With the 0-60 MPH time of the 2022 Challenger coming in as quickly as 3.25 seconds in the proper trim level, you’re going to need a hearty set of brakes to keep all those horses in check. A set of aluminum Brembo four-piston brake calipers with accompanying 14.2-inch vent rotors will certainly do the trick. Other more technical goodies you can expect to find as you sort through trims and packages includes illuminated Air-Catcher® headlamps and a dual-snorkel hood- both of which work to create more ventilation to keep everything under your hood cool and collected.
